Dr. Evangelista

My name is Sandy Corn but all the kids call me “Big Red”. I am professional school bus driver for the Arlington Independent School District.

I started driving a school bus in the Arlington Independent School District over 21 years ago. My best friend was a school bus driver in Houston for 58 years and she encouraged me to pursue the career. I have had many other jobs but after trying this, I just loved it. The thing I like most about my job is that I handle really precious cargo, including special needs children. Since I primarily transport special needs children, I get to go door to door and pick up each child personally. We have a ton of fun on the bus! We listen to the radio, sing, tell jokes and laugh together.

It is so important for me to see my very best since I carry such precious cargo. Every year the school district administers an eye exam and yearly physical. If I do not pass the eye exam, I do not get to continue doing the job I love. Since I am a diabetic, my primary doctor suggested that I have annual diabetic eye exams and referred me to the Kleiman Evangelista Eye Center.

The first time I walked in the door at Kleiman Evangelista Eye Center, the staff was awesome. They were so helpful, polite and professional, and they really knew what they were doing. Dr. Evangelista spent half an hour explaining exactly what was wrong with my eyes- I had cataracts. At the time I did not even know what cataracts were, I thought I was seeing through a fog. I had lived with cataracts so long they just became a part of my everyday life. I didn’t notice a big change since it just happened gradually. I am one of those people who puts things off, and I didn’t want to do anything about it because I thought the eye doctors would give me bad news. But, Dr. Evangelista had great news for me. He could restore my vision with cataract surgery!

After my cataract procedure, I feel so comfortable while driving my kids on the school bus. I can see everything sharp and clear. I know my kids and I are safe thanks to Dr. Evangelista and my new 20/20 vision.

One thing I always wanted to do was become a storyteller. I would love to be able to read to children at local elementary schools. This has been a dream of mine for years. My mother was a storyteller and she would tell me about how much she loved it and what a wonderful response she got from the kids. Before I had my cataract surgery this would never have been a possibility. Now that I had my cataract procedure with Dr. Evangelista and my vision had been restored to 20/20, I am looking forward to becoming a storyteller.

Thanks to Dr. Evangelista and the whole Kleiman Evangelista Eye Center Team, I can achieve new goals and continue doing the job I love!

*As with any vision correction procedure, results may vary patient to patient. Most patients report improved immediate vision. Additionally, the majority of our patients continue to experience improvement in their vision for up to six months.
